Biggest Mistakes of DIY Websites
We have previously discussed in our blog how to save money when creating a website. We know that when creating your business, sometimes you want to save money and cut corners where you can. However, one area you should NEVER cut a corner on is your website! You have to remember, this is how the world sees you, knows what you do and gets the first impression of you. That will determine whether they will click the ‘Contact Us’ button or the X at the top of the page.
People often think using a DIY website is the answer, this is not always the case. When you use a DIY website, there are things you miss, you don’t think about and that don’t always flow properly. Such as:
We mention this a lot, however you must, must, MUST make sure that your website is user friendly across different platforms. That means, it can work on a desktop, mobile and a tablet. And by work, we don’t mean that you can see it, that it has been reformatted to run smoothly and can be viewed normally. This is really important. As of July 2019, 51.1% of traffic to tall websites across the world is through a mobile, with 45% via a desktop and 3.7% via a tablet. As you can see, with the vast majority using a mobile, if your site isn’t mobile friendly, you have automatically lost 50% of your customers.
Call To Action (CTA) is extremely important on a website. Is it what you, the website owner, want the audience to do. You are effectively telling them what to do. This could be anything, from ‘Call Us Today!”, “Register Now For A FREE Download!” or “Request A Call Back From Our Sales Team” – it can be absolutely anything and everything. The main purpose of a CTA is to capture that data, which is the golden ticket. They have shown an interest in your product or service, now you can contact them with information, offers etc (remember due to GDPR regulations, you did need them to consent to you contacting them. You can do this by adding a tick box authorisation on the contact form.)
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is what is used so search engines can find your website and boost it up the search ranks. If your website doesn’t have sufficient SEO then it may as well be invisible as the only people who will visit your website is through direct channels. Therefore, you are drastically limiting your web traffic and conversions to potential new customers. When you create a DIY website, they offer next to no SEO advice/help at all, therefore, unless you know exactly what you are doing with SEO and have the brains to put all of the pieces of the puzzle together, then your website will not attract any organic traffic or be easy to find on search engines.
You might think you are saving a quick buck, but it will always cost you in the long run. As we have discussed before, web designers (especially independent designers) do not need to be expensive.
